Magnetic track — build the loop, the car drives it

Track segments that clip together into a closed loop, and a car that holds onto the rail the whole way round — up the climb, over the top, and back down the other side without falling off.

What it builds

• Cause and effect at speed: a gap in the track is invisible until the car reaches it, and then it is obvious
• Fixing things, because a run that fails gets diagnosed, adjusted and tried again
• Spatial thinking — a loop has to close, and closing it means planning the last piece from the first
• Building for somebody else to watch, which is why this one gets shown to a parent over and over

Why we stock it

Most track toys are laid flat and driven along. This one goes vertical, and that changes the whole activity: the child is not making a road, they are making a machine that either works or does not. The first build takes ten minutes and fails somewhere. The fifth build works, and the child knows exactly why. That loop — build, run, fail, adjust — is the thing we look for in a toy, and it is rare to find it in a set a three-year-old can also just push a car around on.

The track segments and the car, in the printed carton. Nothing to assemble — the box art is the only guide, and the five builds along its edge are a good first afternoon.

Care

Build on a hard floor rather than a rug; carpet swallows the small pieces and slows the car. Wipe the segments with a barely damp cloth and dry them straight away — water reaching a magnet is what ends these sets. Keep everything in the one box, because a loop with a piece missing does not close.
