RC drift car — 1:64 alloy body

A die-cast car the size of a matchbox toy that drives on a remote and is built to go sideways. Give it some throttle into a corner and the back steps out; hold the turn and it keeps sliding. Four cones come in the box, which is what turns it from a car into a course.

What it builds

• Throttle and steering together — a drift only holds if both hands keep adjusting, and that takes practice to learn
• Reading a slide and correcting it, which is genuine hand-eye control rather than button pressing
• Setting a challenge and beating it, because four cones can be moved closer together
• Looking after something breakable, since an alloy body is heavier and less forgiving than plastic

Why we stock it

Most remote control cars only feel fast in a hallway. This one is small enough to drift on a kitchen table or a stretch of tiled floor, so it gets used on ordinary evenings rather than waiting for space. Drifting is also a skill with a ceiling — the first attempts spin out, and a week later the same child can hold a line around a cone. That is unusual for a toy at this price.

In the box

The car, the remote, a USB charging cable, a screwdriver and four traffic cones. The screwdriver is there because the car opens up — the battery and the wheels are serviceable rather than sealed in.

Care

Indoors on hard smooth floors only. Grit is what ends these cars, so keep it off patios, sand and carpet — dust and fibres wind into the axles and stay there. Wipe it with a dry cloth, never a wet one; there is a charging port in the body. It is metal, so a fall from a table will chip the paint. Charge it when it slows rather than leaving it flat for months.
